Tumbleweed Houses

Since 1997, Jay Shafer of the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company has been living in homes smaller than most people’s closets. Though tiny, these cozy, cabin-esque home designs somehow fit everything you need inside them: a workspace, bedroom, bathroom (with toilet and shower) and living space. Some designs include a porch so the homeowner can sit out and enjoy the open spaces.

Micro Compact Home

Measuring only 2.6m cubed, Micro Compact Homes somehow manage to include room for two double beds, a bathroom, lobby, dining space for 4-5 people, a kitchen and top-notch entertainment technology. It’s enough to make you want to stay inside.

Toronto’s Little House

Tucked between its normal-sized neighbors, this miniature home is not the smallest in the world, but it’s likely the smallest one in Toronto, Canada. Boasting a mere 312 square-feet of space, the Little House has garnered cult-like interest since going on the market recently. Celebrity Ellen Degeneres has expressed interest in one day owning the tiny home.

Rollit Homes

Students at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany designed these chic modular homes, which are built to incorporate multiple uses inside one small living space. The home functions like a mouse on a wheel; the homeowner can change the structure of the house by walking in the center to rotate it. With just a little bit of daily exercise, the unit can be turned to reveal a bed, lounge chair, table, shower, toilet, or a kitchen sink — all in the same space!

Eco Bike Trailer

Paul Elkins originally designed this bike trailer to get around the Burning Man Festival. There’s only space for one, and if you need to use the restroom you’ll have to resort to the great outdoors, but it is fully powered by a wind turbine and comes equipped with a solar-powered oven and heating system. (In a space this small, you might not need anything more than your own body heat!)

Smallest House in Great Britain

Also known as the Quay House, the Smallest House in Britain is a tourist attraction in Conwy, Wales. Measuring only 10 feet by 6 feet, it lives up to its name. Until 1900, the home was once occupied by a 6-foot, 3-inch fisherman. It’s hard to believe there was enough room left over for a stove, water tap, bedside cabinet and a bed.

Twelve Cubed Mini Home

According to Twelve Cubed designers, these tiny homes feature a dishwasher, microwave and modern oven combo, bathroom, closet, and plenty of natural light. The mission behind the homes is to allow more people to live more sustainably, but the cute design is a temptation in and of itself.

Nano House

Created to help solve the world’s global housing crisis, these 25 square-meter homes are designed to house a family of four. Nano Living System homes are also equipped with state-of -the-art insulation and passive solar heating for energy savings. The rooms are convertible to make the most of the tiny space.

Tiny Texas Houses

Not everything is bigger in Texas. Tiny Texas Houses, based in Luling, Texas, is a company “building the future with the past.” Each of the tiny houses is made from recycled salvage materials. As the company says on the website: “After a generation of having it all and wasting so much, perhaps it is time to consider keeping it small and preserving what we have before we waste more of our limited resources.”

Single Hauz

These cutting-edge home designs, inspired by the look of roadside billboards, can be built into almost any space. They can even be built as raised homes over a body of water. According to Polish creators Front Architects, the house is perfect for the contemporary, single, independent and modern Western Man, who we also assume ought to be an environmentalist!

10 of The World’s Most Unique Restrooms

  1. THE JOHN MICHAEL KOHLER ARTS CENTER RESTROOM, USA


    The Kohler art centre houses arts exhibits in Sheboygan, WI, USA. The Kohler fund sponsored six artists to design artwork using the facilities and sources from Kohler- a company that sells bathrooms and accessories. One of the restroom units entitled “The Social History of Architecture” features the development of architecture from ancient Egypt until the current time. One restroom unit features “The Many Uses of Water” using beautiful ceramics in blue colours.

  2. SOCCER BALL SHAPED RESTROOM, KOREA


    In 2002, both South Korea and Japan became the hosts for the football World Cup finals. A former Korean mayor came up with the idea of having soccer ball shaped restrooms around the football stadium as part of a campaign to develop clean and comfortable public restrooms in Korea during the big event.
  3. “POP UP” RESTROOM, UK


    This is actually a “pop-up” urinal for use during the nighttime. The durable, cylindrical stainless steel urinal, which is called the Urilift will be lowered into the ground during the day or when it is not needed. Healthmatic, a Wiltshire, UK based company has been given rights to distribute the Urilift in the UK. The Urilift can be used by 3 persons simultaneously.
  4. SEMI-TRANSPARENT TOILET, UK


    This public toilet was built in front of London’s Tate Britain Gallery as an art exhibit by an Italian born artist. What is special about this restroom is that it is made up of semi-transparent glass. The “visitors” of the public toilet (who need to defy their own fear and embarrassment) can see through the one-way mirrored glass but passers-by can’t see the person inside the restroom.
  5. THE “TOILET BAR” RESTROOM, AUSTRIA


    The “toilet bar” of Vienna is actually a public restroom situated in an underpass near the Austria National Opera. The restroom features several units of urinals shaped like thick lipsticked lips with teeth and a tongue. Patrons were charged 75 cents for each visit. Eventually, the urinals were removed after facing public and political pressures as they were said to be offensive and sexist objects.
  6. WORLD’S LARGEST RESTROOM, CHINA


    Quite recently in July 2007, a Southwestern Chinese city in Chongqing opened up a free of charge, four-story public restroom. There are more than 1,000 toilets in this 30,000 square foot restroom. It features an Egyptian-themed interior with soothing music playing in the background. Some of the urinals are uniquely shaped, including crocodile’s mouths and busts of women. The government officials in Chongqing are currently preparing to submit an application to list this facility as the world’s largest public restroom in the Guinness World Records.
  7. 3-D GOLDSTORE, HONG KONG RESTROOM, CHINA


    The gold store owner in Hong Kong was inspired by Lenin’s vision of building public restrooms made of gold. Everything in the restroom including the toilet, sink, tiles and doors are all made of solid gold.
  8. THE CHAMBER POT GALLERY RESTROOM, USA


    The Chamber Pot gallery is a public restroom located in Yellow Springs, Ohio, USA. What’s special about this restroom is that it acts as a showcase for art works by local artists. The paintings will hang for a year in the restroom and there is a log book in the office that highlights the artists and their art work as well as contact information.
  9. SINGAPORE ZOO RESTROOM, SINGAPORE


    This spacious and airy restroom has won many awards locally and internationally for its cleanliness and practical design. A big section of the restrooms are located outdoors, resembling a beautiful garden.
  10. THE JUNGLE JIM’S RESTROOM, USA


    The Jungle Jim’s restroom is located in the Jungle Jim’s International Market in Ohio, USA. The Jungle Jim’s is actually a shopping initiative which provides all sorts of products from international cuisines to pet supplies. The entrance to the restroom is rather unique, as it looks like “port-o-lets” or “porta-potties” and may confuse new customers. The walls inside are decorated and the restroom units are spacious and clean.
